Republicans Name Corman as Senate
Appropriations Chair
Will head fiscal review panel through 2009-10
Legislative Session
Senate Republicans today elected Sen. Jake Corman (R-34) to serve as Chairman
of the Senate Appropriations Committee for the 2009-10 Legislative Session. The
Appropriations Committee reviews all legislation for its fiscal impact and plays
a crucial role in developing the state budget.
“I am truly honored by my colleagues’ support and look forward to serving as
chairman of this important committee,” Senator Corman said. “Our basic
responsibility is to the taxpayers of Pennsylvania and I am committed to working
with my colleagues to ensure that state expenditures are made in a
fiscally-responsible manner.”
"We are very pleased to have Senator Corman serving as the head of this
important committee," said Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-25).
"His experience and commitment to fiscal responsibility will be crucial as we
negotiate this year's budget during these difficult economic times.”
Senator Corman said the General Assembly must be prudent and thorough in its
review of the state budget and spending measures.
“With Pennsylvania facing a revenue shortfall between $1 billion and $2
billion, by the Governor’s own estimates, we must take a hard look at state
spending,” Senator Corman said. “With the tough economic times here in
Pennsylvania and across the nation, we must be pragmatic and responsible in
spending now and in the future. We must not look for short-term solutions that
could have serious long-term ramifications on the Commonwealth and its
citizens.”
Senator Corman is a graduate of Bellefonte Area High School, the Pennsylvania
College of Technology where he earned an associate degree in Communications,
and the Pennsylvania State University where he received a BA degree in
Journalism. He was elected as the Pennsylvania State Senator from the 34th
District in November 1998. Since that time, he has served as Chairman of the
Senate Communications and Technology Committee, the Senate Public Health and
Welfare Committee, and most recently as Chairman of the Senate Republican Policy
Committee.
Senator Corman, his wife Kelli, their daughter Isabella and sons Davis and
Jacob live in Benner Township, Centre County.
