7/16/08
- News Conference
- Senator Piccola
- Senator Vance
- Senator Rhoades
- Senator Folmer
Statement from Senate President Pro Tempore Joe
Scarnati and Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi regarding the proposed
Special Session:
"We applaud Senator Piccola for trying to bring additional attention to
reform issues. The Senate has passed numerous reform-focused bills unanimously
this session, some more than a year ago – and most of which await House action.
Yesterday, we urged Rep. DeWeese to ensure that the members of the House have an
opportunity to vote on those bills.
"Special session is a procedural device that does not necessarily produce
results. The quickest way to achieve the result of passing needed reform
legislation is to utilize the remaining days of the regular session.
"Our commitment to eliminating the notorious lame-duck session this year
means that the legislature will have a relatively compressed time frame in the
fall, so it is important that the reform issues which have earned broad support
be considered in as efficient a manner as possible.
"If the call for a special session can help break the logjam in the House on
reform legislation, it will have served a useful purpose.
"As we have demonstrated since being elected to caucus leadership in November
2006, we are dedicated to ongoing reform of state government. We look forward to
an even more focused consideration of that agenda in the remaining days of this
session and in the upcoming 2009 session."
