Senator Brubaker Released From Hospital Following Surgery

LITITZ – State Senator Mike Brubaker (R-36) was released from Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia today following Tuesday's surgery to remove his prostate.

Brubaker was diagnosed in March with prostate cancer, which is annually identified in 218,890 American men, according to the National Cancer Institute, in March 2008. Further testing confirmed that the cancer had not spread beyond the prostate.

On Tuesday, Brubaker underwent the da Vinci prostatectomy surgery, a robot-assisted, minimally invasive surgery that is the preferred treatment for removal of the prostate following early diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Dr. David Lee, M.D., from Penn's Abramson Cancer Center and Chief of the Division of Urology at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center performed the surgery and said the Senator was a perfect candidate.

According to Dr. Lee, "The surgery itself went very smoothly and the Senator is doing well.  If no complications arise, patients typically return to work full time in two weeks."

The Senator was in good spirits following the surgery. "I feel great and am confident that the treatment and care I received will allow me to return to serving the people of the 36th Senatorial District in the manner they expect," said Brubaker.

"All of the services and assistance offered through the 36th District offices will continue during my recovery," Brubaker added, noting that he plans to attend to Senate business as his recovery allows.

Brubaker, his wife Cindy and their three children are completely optimistic about the success of the surgery.

"My family and I want to express our sincere gratitude for the support we have received from the community," Brubaker said. "It is truly a blessing to represent the fine people of the 36th District and I am pleased to serve them in the state Senate."
